...Oregon's South Coast

Oregon's south coast is no exception to the endless number of beautiful, walkable beaches, seastacks, offshore rock formations and rugged cliff scenes. State Parks are numerous as are charming towns and harbors. Rivers continue to make their way to the Pacific, and the forests are as thick with old growth as anywhere else in the state. Known and unknown, named and unnamed scenic spots await those who explore them.

I traveled Oregon's coast for two months and a week, and hit as many of the vistas and overlooks, beaches and coves as I could. I kept asking myself how any one sea stack or ocean boulder be any different than another; how could the coastline here be any different from the coastline five miles up the road. But there wasn't a time after stopping and taking it in that I didn't raise the camera to my eye simply because the view, or the rock, or the cliff was not only different, it was better.

Otter Point
Otter Point
Otter Point State Recreation Site is a sandstone headland located off the Highway 101 just north of Gold Beach. It is a wonderfully dramatic vista with harrowing cliffs and scenic views north and south.

Paths such as these (Above and Below) travel through a bit of woodland and shrub before getting out to the sandstone vista.

where the Pistol River meets the ocean
Here, south of Gold Beach, the Pistol River meets the Pacific. As is Oregon's custom, it has named the area a state park: The Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint. The beach is Myers Creek Beach.
