Puerto Peñasco, Mexico
Rocky Point, the beach for Arizonans
from Old Port looking across to La Choya

The beach is the definite draw for many Arizonans who don't mind a half-day drive to this seaside resort in Mexico. Situated on the shores of the Gulf of California, known also as the Sea of Cortez, Rocky Point is a destination of relaxation for many snowbirds as well. Some Americans like it well enough to buy homes there. Others are satisfied with just visiting.

My day trip there from the Phoenix area was just long enough to check out the highlights and to see what all the hoopla is about. I was able to get a few pictures in one of the more touristy parts of town, Old Port,, the Fish Market. Just across the water was the white sandy beaches that attract so many.

In La Choya, several huge hotels offer all the conveniences of beach resort living including access to the beach. As well, that area is popular with all-terrain vehicles due to its proximity to the open desert sands.

Just at the tip of Old Port, locals cast fishing lines into the clear green water. It also seems to be a semi-popular swimming hole.

the bell tower entrance to Old Port
An arched bell tower marks the entrance to Old Port, the Fish Market, and its restaurants and souvenir shops. A wonderful view of the gulf can be had by strolling the area's promenade.

One of my favorite things of Old Port is the locals' use of bright colors.
