Yet another stunning Conde McCullough bridge greets you at one end of Gold Beach, and an active wayside with a huge impressive rock formation at the other. From whichever direction the town is entered, visitors will be encouraged by what 's between those two highlights. And there won't be any dissapointment. View an old shipwreck, take a jet tour up the Rouge River or watch the waves crashing at the jetties.

Isaac Patterson bridge
The Isaac Lee Patterson Bridge spans the Rogue River on Gold Beach's north side. It's also called the Rogue River Bridge and was designed by Conde McCullough and built in the early 1930s.

The Mary D. Hume Shipwreck
You could say the Mary D. Hume has come full circle. The journeys of her life began and ended in Gold Beach on the Rogue River. Built in 1881, she was a transport ship of lumber and goods between Oregon and San Francisco; after that she broke records as a whaler in Alaska for several years. And finally until she was retired in 1978, she was used as a tugboat. Totaling 97 years of active service, she holds the record for the longest period of commercial ship service by any vessel. She returned to Gold Beach on her own power, but an accidental sinking left her in the spot she is now, only a few hundred feet from where she was built. The Mary Duncan Hume, named after the wife of the owner, was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 .

crashing waves
There's a nice bank on the south side of the Rogue River jetties where one can sit and watch the waves come in off the ocean. Surfers use this river entry, too, for a little fun.
Rogue River jetties
The water here looks pretty calm as the tide slowly starts to come back in. But it's a little wilder further out as the waves crash against the jetties.

As I was hanging around Gold Beach's harbor, I realized there were signs there you just don't see everywhere. So I shot a few of them.
