...Brookings

I really hated to leave Brookings, because leaving there meant leaving Oregon. It's the southern-most coastal city and a wonderful spot to say good-bye to an incredible summer.

Brookings and Harbor kinda go hand-in-hand, the two communities separated by the Chetco River. Brookings, the larger of the two, has a splendid harbor, an expansive beach, an annual Azalea Festival in the spring and some of the warmest temps on the coast. It boasts not only the state's largest Monterey Cypress tree, but also a myrtlewood forest just north of town. Recreational activities are endless, whether it's boating, golfing, beaching or just taking in a terrific sunset.

Good-bye, Oregon. It was nice meeting you!

In the distance can be seen Bird Island, also called Goat Island (not sure why it has two names). It can best be seen from Harris Beach State Park in Brookings.

Oregon's largest Monterey Cypress tree
It's hard to capture the enormity of this Monterey Cypress on the grounds of the Chetco Museum in Brookings Harbor. But it measures 99 feet high and 34 feet in circumference. It's thought to be more than 150 years old and is said to be Oregon's largest. The tree was planted in 1850s by Harrison G. Blake who owned the property on which the tree sits. Blake was a member of Oregon's House of Representative as well as Chetco postmaster. On the grounds now is the Chetco Valley Museum.
