...Samuel H. Boardman State Park
12 miles of named viewpoints

The Samuel H. Boardman State Park is not like the typical state park. It's considered a corridor, 12 miles long, starting at Milepost 343 along the Highway 101 on Oregon's south coast. Along this stretch of rugged coastline are named viewpoints, many of which require walking a forested trail to the 'main attraction.' Beautiful rock formations, gorgeous beaches, scenic vistas and forested walking trails can all be found within this 12-mile wonder of nature.

Samuel H. Boardman, as Oregon's first Park Superintendent, was influential in preserving the Oregon coastline for the general public.

Arch Rock
A short walk leads to Arch Rock Point. Views up and down the coast can be had there. Walk the distance of the safety (but unobtrusive) fence line to get various scenic views.

Natural Bridge
old-growth forest
A platform very close to the parking lot overlooks Natural Bridges Cove. I hope the park services department plans on cutting back some shrubery, else this gorgeous rock formation will not be in view much longer. A trail from the platform leads down to the beach that can be enjoyed at low tide.
This is a typical path through old-growth forest in the Samuel H. Boardman corridor. This one led to the Thomas Creek Bridge, but, to be honest, the walk was prettier than the view of the bridge. The Thomas Creek Bridge is the highest on the Oregon coast at 345 feet.
Whaleshead Beach (rock formation)
Whaleshead Beach
Anyone who has seen a whale breach will probably understand the naming of this viewpoint: Whaleshead. There is both a walking trail and a driving path leading to the 1.5-mile long beach.

The next few shots are of Thunder Rock Cove. There seem to be a few different ways of getting to the overview of this stunning part of the Sam Boardman corridor. Also, there's a rather difficult (I did not take it) route to Secret Beach and a couple others that can only be enjoyed at low tide - one of them only at an unusually low tide. I didn't venture down to the beaches, but the views from the top are breath-taking. A word of warning: please, please - watch the kids and pets. The viewpoint is reached by a nice trail which widens at the end to see the coast at different angles. But you're on an unprotected cliff - no fence, no safety net. I was happy to get back on safer ground, but had I not gone, I've have missed one of the most beautiful parts of the whole corridor.

Here's another area of the Samuel Boardman that could use some trimming. To see this arch at Thunder Rock Cove, one has to kinda stretch over the edge of a rather narrow and harrowing path.
Lone Ranch Beach
Lone Ranch Beach
Another impressive beach in the Sam Boardman corridor is this, Lone Ranch Beach. Quiet, lots of seastacks and offshore rocks, and lots of tide pools at low tide.

Seen in the background of this photo is Cape Ferrelo, just north of Lone Ranch Beach. Also part of the Sam Boardman corridor, the cape has trails through the grass that go out to the tip of the headland. If it's a windy day, hold on to your hat, camera and children!!! It can blow you over out there!!

The views from a small headland called Cape Ferrelo are stunning. Above is Lone Ranch Beach.

Cape Ferrelo grass
A network of very narrow paths, barely wide enough to keep one's footing, through waist-high grass (depending on one's height!!) leads to the tip of the cape for dramatic views of the coast.
