In the summer of 2010, I was returning to southern Utah from Branson, Missouri. I blew across Kansas and took a little more time in Colorado.
I had been to the Pike's Peak area on a family vacation while in my teens, but that had been the extent of Colorado travel until 2010. I came in on the Interstate 70 until I hit Limon where I took a short little detour on State Highway 86 to Castle Rock, then up the Insterstate 25 through Denver.
Once I got west of Denver, I started paying attention to the scenery and decided that at some point, I'm going to have to come back and "see Colorado well." I continued on through Idaho Springs where I spent the first night. The next day, I headed south on State Highway 91 to Leadville, ran across the Lakeview Campground where I set up camp and spent the night. After a hearty breakfast in Leadville, I took in Leadville and the steam train tour that goes up to Bartlett Mountain, then took off up State Highway 24 to Vail. From there I got back on the Interstate 70 bound for Grand Junction with a grand stop at Glenwood Canyon.
It was a quick trip, just enough to make me reailize I needed to return. Hence, this summer of 2012.
