Other than the Absolute Bakery, Mancos doesn't have a whole lot going for it...a small town of less than 1500 residents in southwest Colorado, considered the Gateway to Mesa Verde. But the town came alive on a brisk and sunny weekend in September to celebrate its 8th annual Balloon and Art Festival.

Some 20 balloons took off toward the cloudless blue sky, leaving watchers to head for warmth, many to the bakery for a hearty breakfast and hot coffee. A little later, a city block was cordoned off for 1o or so arts booths.

Nearby attractions to Mancos are Mesa Verde, the McPhee Reservoir, Mancos State Park and Durango, which lies 28 miles to the east.
