...Colorado Springs
here and there
I've only been in Colorado Springs a couple days, so I'm still trying to get oriented. I did find Garden of the Gods....how can one not. Its massive red boulders dominate the area and draw you in.
Also, the Waldo Canyon fire...how horrible. It was not kind to more than 300 homes, and the area where the iconic Flying W Ranch was located was badly hit...including the ranch itself. I took some pictures, but felt really lousy doing so. Would have taken more had it not been peoples' homes and livlihoods.
On this page are areas I've been to so far. Links at the bottom of this page will connect you with other ColSprings highlights.
When I first saw this old log sitting in the brush, I thought someone had lost a hat, on a trail in Bear Creek Park. That's where the following few shots were taken, too.
Flowers are singing in the garden of the Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs.
The mountains are beautiful as seen from the North Cheyenne Canon Park on the way to the zoo.
Colorado Springs seems to have a lot of areas called "open spaces' that are areas with trails. This one close to Manitou Springs is called the Red Rock Canyon Open Space. It had several trails of various levels of expertise. This and the next few pictures were taken there.

Seven Falls is an impressive area in a box canyon on Cheyenne Mountain. A series of stairs (224 of 'em) takes you to the top of the highest of the seven falls.
Another staircase of 185 steps, with the option of an elevator, takes you to a lookout where you can see the complete fall, a view you do not get by taking the stairs closest to the falls.
There are three gift shops on the grounds as well as a snack bar.
There are other Colorado Springs locations, too, such as Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs, Garden of the Gods and The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. You can find links to each of them on the Colorado home page, plus other Colorado state locations.

These are sports fields on the grounds of the U.S. Air Force Academy on Colorado Springs' north side.
I drove up to the Academy mostly to see the chapel. It's gorgeous.
Right: This is a shot of the Red Rock Canyon Open Space from the Old Colorado City Trail in Garden of the Gods. Geologically, the open space is a continuation of the garden, but its location on the other side of a city highway (Highway 24) separates it, making it technically outside the garden grounds.
