...Monterey
Treat yourself, go visit

Mention Monterey Bay to anyone, and they oooh and ahhh even if they've never been. The reputation of this spectacular piece of earth is well-deserving. Monterey is probably one of the most sought-after and popular spots in California, but miraculously it maintains an easy, lay-back, non-rushed atmosphere. The people are friendly, the homes exquisite, the food scrumptious, and the scenery:beyond words. Truly.

The pictures on this page are of only a small portion of Monterey Bay. The towns along the bay are numerous and run from Santa Cruz on the north end to Carmel-by-the-Sea on the south. Each of the towns I visited has its own page of pictures, too numerous to put all on one.

On this page are photos mostly of the Old Fisherman's Wharf, which make up one of the most touristy sections of Monterey, the town and perhaps the whole of Monterey Bay. (Note: Whether the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row are technically in Monterey or Pacific Grove, I'm not sure. But I'm including the pictures of those on this page. )

Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey
Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf is one restaurant after another interspersed with souvenir and various other types of shops. Many of the offices for boat excursions are also on the wharf. Once the primary fish market of the area, today it lends itself almost completely to tourism. There's something exciting about walking the length of the pier and back, even without going into every shop.

Old Fisherman's Wharf
Cannery Row is a small setion of Monterey, once a major sardine canning area. When the fishing industry fell in the mid-1950s, the area gradually became a tourist attraction of restaurants, hotels and shops. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is at the north end of Cannery Row.
