We had one destination in Northern Ireland on our trip through the beautiful United Kingdom countryside, and that was the Giant's Causeway.
The site is a collection of hexagonal-shaped basalt columns all linked together (the Website counts 40,000 columns) that rise from the ground and water, the result of a long-ago volcanic eruption. The tops of the columns form stepping stones so that visitors can walk among the structure. They begin at the foot of a hill and extend outward until they disappear under the water.
There seem to be conflicting legends as to how the "causeway" got its name, but it is fact that on the Scottish side of the sea, the same basalt columns exist, all apart of the same lava flow.
The formation is Northern Ireland's most popular attraction, and it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986. It's located on N. Ireland's north coast.
