The Isle of Skye
page 2
The animals on Skye come in all shapes and sizes....and dispositions.
Check out the two characters above who seem really pleased (?) to have their picture taken.
Above, left is one of many Highland cows we saw grazing. They are affectionately called 'coos' and are native to Scotland.
Ah, the Cuillins.
The Cuillins are located in Skye's Minginish region. They make up one of the steepest mountain ranges in the United Kingdom.
But you can walk the soft, grassy slopes for miles before ever reaching the mountainous parts. From the Sligichan Hotel, cross over the stone bridge and go through the gate at the far end.
These next few pictures were taken there.
This next series of shots, including the coos below, was yet another of the many highlights of my week trip to Skye and the Highlands.
These were taken on Coral Beach, on a small piece of land that juts out on the west side of Waternish peninsula where the single-lane road ends at Claigan.
After walking the distance from the parking lot, through the gate and to the beach, we felt that not only had the road ended, but the earth as well.
It wasn't necessarily remote; there were plenty of people there walking the beach and pastures, but the feeling that we were so far removed from civilization was overwhelming.
We traversed the slopes, divided by old stone walls that seemed to finally be succombing to the harsh rains and winds that must envelope this hauntingly attractive spot of Skye, to eventually reach the volcanic-like rocky beach that lay before us, inviting us to explore its every inch.
The picture on the right is of the three-and-half mile road that leads to Coral Beach.
We weren't sure just how friendly - or non-friendly - these Highlander coos could be. In the case of the baby, we thought they were pretty adorable.
Others, such as the one below, were just down-right sexy.
