...St. George Peninsula
off the beaten path

St. George Peninsula is another of Maine's mid-coast locations that is not particularly attracted by tourists. Quiet, remote, mostly residential and largely ignored, it's a gem of an area as picturesque as its neighbors Boothbay and Rockport/Camden. It's graced by two lighthouses that are open to the public: Marshall Point and Owl's Head. A third lighthouse is private and cannot be accessed.

Tenants Harbor, Port Clyde and the two lighthouses are the main atractions, simple as they are.

Here's a peak at each.

Marshall Point Lighthouse was built in 1858. In my opinion, it's just one of the sweetest ones on the Maine mid-coast. It marks the entrance to the St. George River and the harbor of Port Clyde fishing village. The keeper's house is now a museum, It makes note that Marshall Point Light was featured in the movie "Forest Gump." It was at this lighthouse's runway that he completed his cross-country run.

Owl's Head Light as we see it today was built in 1852. It overlooks Rockland Harbor and Penobscot Bay. What was once the keepr's house is at the bottom of the stairs.
