Lordy, I wouldn't recommend anyone spending more time in Gallup, New Mexico, than necessary, but there are areas outside of it that are worth seeing. Because it's in close proximity to the Colorado Plateau, the draw to the city would have to be the line of red rock sandstone cliffs that lie north of Gallup and travel largely east to west.
Church Rock is a tiny part of this range, all on Navajo Reservation land, and, though small compared to the overall vastness of the Colorado Plateau, it still has its beauty and is worth a look-see.
The real draw is Red Rock Park, a complex of social and sports events held at various times of the year. It comprises an arena, a few hundred permanent horse stables, a convention center and a campground, among other things. Rodeos, Indian ceremonies and a yearly balloon fest take place at the park. Also, a couple of hiking trails are available, one leading to Church Rock.
It's there at Red Rock Park Arena that these beautiful rock formations can be found. Even if there's nothing going on, the park is open for camping and hiking.
