...Lunenburg

I was excited to finally get into Nova Scotia, my first location being in the area of Lunenburg. On the way to Lunenburg from New Brunswick, I stopped in to see the Anne Murray Center in Springhill, her childhood hometown. It was a good stop, well worth the time and minimal entrance fee.

The town of Lunenburg per se was not my destination, as I tend to enjoy exploring the back roads.

Hence, I happened upon Stonehurst East and Blue Rocks, residential peninsulas jutting out into Lunenburg Bay with deep fishing coves and lots of serene beauty.

Not to completely ignore Lunenburg, I happened upon its waterfront, a delight with lots of eateries , the world-renown Bluenose (and Bluenose II) schooner and homes of every bright color imaginable.

Even in the rain, the LaHave River ferry crossing led me to the LaHave Bakery, a trip and meal well worth the time.

But that's not all! Another day took me along the Highway 3 coast, known as the South Shore, to Peggy's Cove. It was a delightfully perfect, sunny day and a great drive with lots and lots of stops along the way. Those pictures can be found on the next page. A link is below.

Stonehurst East. Soon upon my arrival to the Lunenburg area, the rain came, but didn't last long. By late afternoon, it had stopped completely, but the skies were still overcast. I looked at the map for someplace close to explore since it was late in the day and came upon the villages of Stonehurst and Blue Rocks, just outside Lunenburg. Talk about a find! Quaint and picturesque, they still remain at the top of my favorite places in the area.

A very entertaining and informative Anne Murray Center is located in Springhill, hometown of singer Anne Murray. It's located on Springhill's Main Street, not far from her chldhood home. The center is very well done and larger than it appears from the outside. It captures her life from chlldhood to current with much emphasis on her family and the town of Springhill itself.

Bluenose II
The Bluenose II. The Lunenburg waterfront. Lunenburg is home of the Bluenose, a fishing and racing schooner built in 1921. She is Canada's most famous ship, known for racing capabilities, Her picture is etched into the Canadian dime. Her fate came to an end on January 28, 1946 when she struck a reef off the shore of Haiti. No lives were lost, but the ship could not be salvaged.
Today, the Bluenose II graces Lunenburg's waterfront, built in the same Lunenburg shipyard as the original. She was launched in 1963.

The towns of LaHave are numerous. South of Lunenburg, there's LaHave, East LaHave, West LaHave and Upper LaHave. They dot the sides of the wide LaHave River, and a car ferry pulled by cable is transport from the town of Riverport on the east side to LaHave on the west. If in LaHave, don't miss the LaHave Bakery. In fact, go there just for that. It's worth it. It serves coffees, baked goods, jams and a breakfast and lunch menu. It's open 9 am to 4 daily.

St. Mark's Place is an event facility that opens to the LaHave River in Middle LaHave. Its history dates back to 1901 when it was built as a Luthern church. It served the community as such for the following 104 years. It was then restored to its present state to serve in another fashion.
