the wandering chick
June 11 - 14, 2019
I was telling a friend about our annual reunions and that we all taught together back in the 70s. I got a question that I had never been asked before: "Is everyone still living?" I thought, "Hmmm, that's a question one would ask of a group of old folks." And then I realized...well, yeah, we are kinda getting there. My philosophy on that subject: Older not old, right? My response to the question was that yes, we have lost a few**, but the majority of us is still kicking...perhaps just not as high.
We are a fortunate group in many ways, but especially health-wise. Our thoughts, prayers and good wishes go out to our matriarch, Anne Yore, who was unable to make it this year due to health. Al, we know she's in good hands.
We missed others, too, but gained one: Linda Van Derslice's brother, Roger Smith. Welcome aboard, Roger!
Saugatuck proved to be a great choice for this year's reunion, our 13th. We ate well and often, as usual, had perfect accommodations, got in some shopping, traveled to Grand Rapids to the former President Gerald Ford's presidential museum and took a boat ride down the Kalamazoo River.
Our thanks go out to all the attendees. Each of the 16 helped make the reunion special and fun. As always, we thank Jerry for the outstanding planning and correspondences it took to make this reunion as smooth and organized as they always are.
Next year's gathering?? Sounds like it might be Portland, Maine and surrounding area. Hope to see everyone there!! Until then, Auf Wiedersehen.
...Our reunion in Saugatuck, Michigan
The Saugatuck Chain Ferry is the last chain ferry in the continental U.S. Here, it crosses the Kalamazoo River. Only a few of us decided to take the approximate five-minute ride across. Others enjoyed the picturesque park setting at the landing.
Never thought I'd be taking pictures of Canada Geese, but this little guy had us all smiling.
Buying tickets for the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids
We thought it appropriate to have a group shot taken in front of a portion of the fallen Berlin wall that was on display in the lobby of the museum.
It was a couple of friends of Jerry who recommended eating at the Van Der Mill in Grand Rapids. Nancy, and Emily, both former DoDDS teachers, joined us there for dinner.
The Star of Saugatuck sternwheel paddle boat took us on a 90-minute cruise on the Kalalmazoo River and onto Lake Michigan.
The special people get to board first.
The breakwaters mark the entrance to the Kalamazoo River from Lake Michigan.
May the good Lord and the Mennonite peoples forgive me if I wasn't supposed to take their picture.
It was a good thing we got our cruise and ice cream in on Wednesday, because Thursday was a washout.
We had great accommodations, two homes that were fairly close together. Above right is one of them. Neither was far from the lake, so we were able to take short strolls down to the water's edge.
Dog? What dog???
I don't see a dog in the house!
Nope. No dog in THIS house.
Saying good-byes
Good-byes were said to Kathy and Karen, then to the Uptons, then to the Van Derslices and Roger. The remaining few left shortly thereafter, leaving nothing that would indicate we were ever there.
On the way back home, John and Linda stopped by to visit with Annie and Al.. No doubt, though the two weren't with us physically, they were with us every step in spirit.
To view some of the previous reunions, please return to the reunion home page.
Or, you may enjoy visiting the old (but not ancient!!) pictures taken when we were all in Vilseck.
Exit
We have just learned of the passing of Incilay Golden Kowalski, known to us as Angie. She passed in November, 2018, after a long illness.
Angie was our elementary school secretary during the John Ferry years. She was part of our family and attended many of the social and travel functions during those years. She and Bill attended only one of our teachers reunions, the one held in Ashville, North Carolina (2008), where this picture was taken.
Our belated condolences to Bill and Angie's family.
