The Pentagon Memorial rests on the southwest side of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. It is a tribute to those 184 people who perished when al Qaeda terrorists flew an American Airlines, Flight 77, into the south side of the Pentagon.
The memorial opened to the public on September 11, 2008. Illuminated benches, each with an engraved name, are arranged on the grounds, one for each victim, starting with the youngest, age 3, and ending with the oldest, age 71.
Those benches representing the victims who were inside the Pentagon are arranged so that visitors reading the names face the Pentagon's south facade, where the plane hit. Benches dedicated to those aboard the plane are arranged so that visitors face skyward along the path the plane traveled.
Under each bench is a lighted pool of flowing water. A wall travels the edge of the memorial. At one end, it's 3 inches tall and it graduates to a heighth of 71 inches - representing the ages of the victims. Maple trees are scattered among the memorial grounds.
The memorial is open seven days a week year-round and is the only place on the Pentagon grounds where photography is permitted.
