If you’re not in a hurry, take the express train.
Say what?
The Glacier Express is really not an express train at all. At least not in terms of speed. Traveling between Zermatt and St. Moritz, it averages a speed of just more than 20mph. That means roughly 7 ½ hours to go169 miles!
So why is it called an express train? Most likely because it’s a direct line ‘from end to end’ with few stops and no transfers or changes.
But as a passenger, one is in no hurry to reach the destination.
This is a spectacular ride – whether summer or winter – over the nearly 7,000-foot high Oberalp Pass. It traverses the complete southern section of Switzerland, east to west, crossing 91 bridges and through nearly 300 tunnels, offering breath-taking views of the mighty Swiss Alps
