...Aiken
& the Savannah River Scenic Byway

Aiken is a charming little town in western South Carolina, south of Augusta and just a couple of hours east of Atlanta, Georgia. Its specialty seems to be the vast variety and number of trees that adorn the streets. One particual beauty is the South Boundary Avenue lined with live oaks that create a perfect arch over the street.

I didn't spend a whole lot of time in the town of 32,000 residents, but I checked out the Carolina Bay Nature Preserve, a Vircity park across the street from the preserve and walked a couple of streets in the quaint downtown district.

I also took a drive along a southern portion of the Savannah River Scenic Byway. The byway runs 100 miles north and south along the Georgia-South Carolina border. Rich in history, beauty and state parks, it's an interesting, easy and nnjoyable drive.

On this page are pictures that reflect my short time in the area.

South Boundary Avenue, also known as The Avenue of Oaks, is a popular street in Aiken known for its beautiful live oak trees that form a canopy over the street. Live oaks are evergreen trees, keeping their green leaves through the winter months.
