...the Carson Valley
rich in history, rich in beauty
The pictures on this page were taken in the upper Carson Valley, between Carson City and Minden. The road above, Foothill Road, is remarkably scenic and wanders between Highway 395 and the Sierras that separate Nevada and California.
Genoa is Nevada's oldest settlement and it has sat regally at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas since 1851. In fact, it was the vast mountain range, you could say, that helped create Genoa, which became a resting stop for the Mormons and other pioneers who had crossed the Great Basin from the east in their search for a better life in the west....that would be over those great mountains into California.
In an effort to keep its original appearance, it has no traffic lights - not that a town that size needs one. It's an easy day trip from Reno and certainly from Carson City. One could spend a couple hours in the town; most everything is within an easy three- or four-block walk.
The Pink House came into existence in 1855, built by Colonel John Reese who established much of the town of Genoa. It's a well-known landmark not only in Genoa, but in the state as well. It was NOT, of course, always pink. That happened in 1956. Today, the house is for sale: a little more than 2700 square feet, wrap-around porch and an upstairs apartment that has two bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. It's selling to date for $575,000.
