The Pyramids of the Sun and Moon are located in the ancient city of Teotihuacan which, in the years between 300 and 500 AD, was the hub of Mesoamerica. Mesoamerica today covers the area from mid-Mexico south into parts of Central America.
It is unclear who built the city, but it is known that it was founded as early as 400 BC even though the pyramids were not completed until around 300 AD.
The city of Teotihuacan covers about 8 square miles and contains a vast number of structures including apartments, temples, plazas and pyramids.
It was the Aztecs who named the pyramids the Sun and the Moon many civilizations later, after the city had been abandoned for centuries. Underneath the pyramids we see today are layers of structures from previous civilizations .
