...Germany
...Passau
Passau is a Bavarian town on the Austrian border. It's known as the City of Three Rivers, as the Inn, the Ilz and one of the most famous of Germany's rivers, the Danube, merge there.
...Regensburg
Regensburg is another Bavarian town on the Danube River. Its history dates back more than 2000 years, and it is known as one of the most well-preserved Medieval cities since it was spared bombing during World War II.
The Historische Wurstküche (Historic Sausage Kitchen) dates back to the 12th Century. Its specialty of bratwursts is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
The Walhalla was conceived by Bavaria's King Ludwig I as a Hall of Fame honoring German-speaking scientists, philosophers and artists. It was built in 12 years, from 1830-1842 and is modeled after the Parthenon in Athens. It's located on the bank of the Danube outside the city of Regensburg.
...Stein am Rhein, Switzerland
I have included Stein am Rhein with my Germany pictures since they seem more appropriate here than with my Switzerland collection of photos taken mostly deep in the heart of the Alps.
Stein am Rhein is located nearly on the German border south of the Bodensee. It sits picturesquely on the Rhein River.
...Ulm
Ulm is a city of 120,000 in the state of Baden-Württemberg and was founded around the year 850. It has two claims to fame: It has a church whose steeples are the tallest in the world; and it is the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
The spire of the Gothic Ulm Minster, a protestant cathedral, rises 161 meters (528 feet). The church was built in 1377, but the spire was not added until 1890, making it the tallest spire in the world. There are 768 steps to the top of the spire from which the photo on the right of two lower steeples was taken.
In the Fishermen's Quarter of Ulm are many old, old half-timbered houses resting seemingly precariously on the banks of the River Blau. The most photographed of these houses, among the cobblestoned streets and amusing footbridges, is the Schiefes Haus, the crooked house. It was built in the 16th century and is today a hotel.
