Pender Island is located off Vancouver Island in the Gulf of Georgia and is one of the southern Gulf Islands. Its size, less than 15 square miles, makes it a wonderful day trip, accessible from both Vancouver Island as well as the mainland. Pender is actually two islands, North and South Pender, the two separated only by a narrow one-lane bridge over a canal that was dredged in the early 1900s.
I am fortunate to have friends who live on Pender, two of a little more than 2200 permanent residents. Though I was happy to explore Pender, the island, I was way, way more excited to see my friends whom I'd met while RV-ing in Arizona.
They showed me the highlights of the island, one being beautiful Brooks Point Regional Park, where we took a wonderful hike along the southern rocky shoreline.
Pender's mild climate keeps residents at home in the winter months, It's the summer, when the tourists take over, that they are more likely to exodus. And it's no wonder tourists invade, where everything from golf to art galleries is at one's fingertips.
Most of the pictures on this page were taken from the Brooks Point hike, one of many not to be missed on this splendid picturesque treasure.
