...Port Hawkesbury area
Isle Madame and Guysburough to Canso
The seemingly remote area of Port Hawkesbury has some wonderful small villages along shores around the most southeasterly section of Guysborough County as well as on the small Isle of Madame. One reaches the Isle of Madame by way of the coastal Fleur-de-lis Trail. The name through this Acadian region is a hint of its French influence.
What's nice about these areas is the lack of tourists. Granted, there's little to bring them here, but the remoteness is what makes it tranquil and picturesque.
Arichat is the most populated village on the island. Our Lady of Assumption dominates a square there.
The MarachePoint Lighthouse off Cape Aguete Road was first lit in 1851 and is still operating today.
The lighthouse on Jerseyman Island can be seen from Arichat.
The Artworks East shop at the Guysborough marina offers fabulous works by local artists.
Highway 16 travels south and east from Port Hawkesbury partially hugging the Chedabucto Bay. Most of the following pictures were taken along that route, but often taking a side road that sometimes led to a private driveway, sometimes did not. This scene is on Highway 16 just after leaving Guysborough, heading south.
The Queensport Lighthouse on Chedabucto Bay on Rook Island. It was established in 1936, replacing a former lighthouse built in 1882.
Beach Lane is one of those side roads I took hoping it wasn't a private road. It seems here, even if it is, the people don't mind the intrusion. This and the next couple of shots were taken there, near Phillips Harbor.
This Flat Stanley must have been enjoying the warmth of the rocks. His family was nearby enjoying the cool water. It was aken on Fox Island Road leading to an RV campground.
Fox Island can be seen in the background.
In its heyday, the town of Canso was a major port, outranking Halifax. Located in Guysborough County, it is the most easterly town on mainland Nova Scotia.
The Whitehead wharf once the fog rolled in. Whitehead is a fishing village on the most southerly coast of Guysborough County, just off the Highway 316.
