You ask yourself, "What was your most favorite?" On a trip so fantastic as the one to the Banff and Jasper National Parks, I came away with a zillion favorites. To say that seeing a grizzly was more fun than seeing a glacier is unreasonable and untrue. I wouldn't have wanted to give up seeing either one.
With that said, let's call the Mt. Edith Cavell and the Angel Glacier not THE favorite, but A favorite.
The 11,033-ft mountain was named in honor of a British nurse who, during World War I, helped allied soldiers trapped behind enemy lines rejoin their units. The Germans considered this treason and so executed her in 1915. In 1916, the Edith Louise Cavell peak was renamed to honor her memory.
The paved path leading up to the base of the mountain is called the Path of the Glacier Trail. It's a short, but gradual uphill slope, and the reward at the top is a magnificent view of the meltpond at the foot of Edith Cavell mountain and what is called Angel Glacier.
Angel Glacier is so called because its form resembles an angel's wings as it slides down the face of the mountain.
The trail then continues past the pond and returns to the parking lot.
Aaaahh, Medicine Lake, the mystery lake. It has two faces: full and empty. Full in the summer and empty in the fall. That, of course, is typical of many lakes, but the mystery around Medicine Lake is that it has no outlet. The water just seems to drain like a bathtub rather than emptying to another source.
Scientists have studied the phenomenon and discovered an underground cave system that they feel may be one of the most extensive in the world.
Even empty, the lake was quite picturesque and worth a few shots.
There's still one more page of Jasper pictures, Page 3.
Go to the Canada home page to view other Canadian Rockies, especially the Icefields Parkway, a true highlight.
