Synonymous with Banff Natl Park is Lake Louise. It's the most popular of Banff's lakes for many reasons, among them: its intense beauty, the towering Mount Victoria at the far end of the lake and the Fairmont Chateau for the upmost in lodging. The next few pictures are of Lake Louise and its own set of mountains.
The next few pictures are of Johnson Lake, just outside of Banff. There's a trail that goes completely around the lake, showing off the mountains above from every angle.
The rugged mountains contradict the serenity and gentleness of Johnson Lake.
Minnewanka Lake, also just outside of Banff, has its own walking trail . We went as far as we could, which was to a wooden bridge on the far side. From that point, the trail was temporarily closed because of recent bear activity in that area. Whenever bears are spotted near a hiking trail, the trail is often closed to give the bear its space, and, of course, to protect hikers.
On my trip to Banff and Jasper National Parks, I was astounded by the beauty of the stark Canadian Rockies and the magnificent turquoise colors of so many of the lakes.
Three of the lakes just knocked my socks off: Emerald Lake in Yoho Natl Forest, Peyto Lake on the Icefields Parkway and this one, Moraine Lake , often overlooked due to its close proximity to the more popular Lake Louise. If you're headed to Lake Louise, by all means, make it over to Moraine Lake, just ten minutes away. And take a jaw strap.
Rising above Moraine Lake are the Wenkchemna Mountains, referred to as the 'ten peaks.'
Here, the mountain called the Tower of Babel above Moraine Lake.
I tried to capture the elusive figure just below the moutain ridge in this picture. My friend saw it as an angel with her skirt flowing and her arms reaching out toward the right. Silly me. I saw a spaceship taking off. But now I see the angel more clearly.

Moraine Lake has a lodge, a snack bar and an outdoor patio.
At around 9 in the morning on the Highway 1A which parallels the main Highway (Interstate) 1, we were headed to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake when we saw cars pulled over to the road. That always means wildlife. In this case, it was a big 'ol grizzly bear. It's the only grizzly we saw.
