It would have been pretty easy spending the day gawking over the homes along the coast in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a town of around 4,000 most known for its flare for the arts. It sits on the south end of the Monterey peninsula.

The Carmel Mission, one of the more popular pilgrimage sites in the U.S., was founded in 1770. Its rich history is chronicled within its walls. A couple hours of touring the mission and its courtyard is time well spent.

The Carmel River originates in the Santa Lucia mountains, travels some 36 miles through the valley, then empties here at the ocean just south of the town. A small park called the Carmel River Lagoon and Wetlands Natural Preserve marks the spot.
