I hadn't heard of Capitola, a small, colorful beach town on Monterey Bay just south of Santa Cruz, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. It's a nice-sized resort with restaurants and shops along the beachfront. Its wharf is fun to stroll and people- or bird-watch.
Rental bungalows on the sand add a whimsical flavor to the town, and the trendy shops are a bit above the typical souvenir shops.
Capitola is said to be the oldest beach town on the west coast.
