St. Anthony's Greek Monastery
Florence

St. Anthony's is a Greek Orthodox Monastery located in the Sonoran Desert just on the outskirts of Florence. It came into existance in 1995, named for St. Anthony the Great, a Christian monk from Egypt, also known as the Father of All Monks and Anthony of the Desert.

The monastery is home to some 50 monks, but the grounds are open daily to the public. A self-guided tour allows one to view the stunning oasis-like grounds, the seven chapels (each dedicated to a different saint) and the citrus and olive groves. In addition to the sprawling estate of the grounds, a blue-domed white chapel rests atop a nearby hill.

A dress code is mandatory for all visitors. Women must wear a head covering and a skirt that covers the legs. Men must wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Shorts and baseball caps are not allowed. Appropriate clothing is available upon entry for those who need them. Everything is free of charge, but donations are accepted.
