...Off-roading to Crown King
over "the waterfall" we go

When I first heard of "going over the waterfall" by off-roaders, my imagination went into overload. Then, when I found out I was going to get to do it, Ifigured I better ask a few questions, inquire a little further, even though I would be just a passenger.

To my relief, THIS waterfall is a trickle and no more than three feet high at best. Smack dab in the middle of the trail is a bundle of low-lying bolders that even the most-equipped off-road vehicles can have difficulty crossing. The option to the bolders is the waterfall that, in itself, is a challenge, one that gets the adrenaline pumping to even the most daring off-roaders. In fact, when we approached it in the OFV. the driver had us three passengers get out...just in case. Or maybe it was the extra weight he didn't want! At any rate, it was probably more fun watching it anyway.

So, I don't know specifically where the waterfall is. I just know it's on one of the several routes up to Crown King, a small community up in the Bradshaw Mountains northwest of Phoenix. Its population is right around 100, and its elevation is a little more than 5700 feet. It's a destination for off-roaders and bikers, having not much more to offer than a gas station, general store and a couple of eating establishments.

As often is the case in off-roading, the journey is better than the destination. The panoramic views en route over and around the mountains were incredibly stunning on this particular sunny spring day.

Three vehicles were caravaning to Crown King. One had already crossed the bolders when the second two approached. Here is the second one, choosing to climb the rocks rather than the waterfall.

The waterfall. Lodged at the top is a random truck that, fortunately, isn't in the direct path of vehicles crossing the waterfall.

Most likely this is either a bull or a pine snake, non-venemous.
