...a Herd of Elk
the wandering chick
southeast Oregon's Highway 78

Some might say if you've seen one herd of elk, you've seen them all. But, it was a fine morning, around 8:30, when I was bounding down southeastern Oregon's Highway 78 in my 26-foot RV and looked over to the east to see three to four dozen elk silently grazing the countryside.

Who would not pull over to take in such a grand scene?

It didn't take them long to notice me; I was the only moving object on the road. So they began to trot away from me. I watched them distance themselves for maybe a quarter mile when finally they felt safe enough to cross the highway.

I was thrilled, but they were anxious, so I moved on, euphoria tingling my senses.
