End of the Whistle Stop tour
Clinton's Soda Fountain, in historic downtown Independence, is where Pres. Truman held his first job as a teen. Today, the soda bar is still there where you can order ice cream, soda and sandwiches. The walls are lined with pictures of yesteryear.
Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States, lived in this house on Delaware Street until his death in 1972. Bess continued to live in the house, which they called their 'Summer White House," until her death nearly 10 years later. The house is open for tours.
Truman's "Whistle Stop (campaign) tour in 1948 ended here at the train depot in Independence.
Visitor's Center
Independence offers horse and buggy tours which begin here at the Visitor's Center.
Community of Christ temple
Independence is also home to the Headquarters and temple of the Communitiy of Christ, an international denomination based on the beliefs of the Latter Day Saints.

In stark contrast to historic downtown Independence is the temple and headquarters building of the Community of Christ. It's stainless steel steeple can be seen from many locations as it rises above the city.

At left is the inside of the steeple and the ceiling of the temple's sanctuary. A tour can be taken of the temple which offers unique pieces of artwork and a beautiful contemporary sanctuary.
