...The Mosel River
and the towns along its banks
The part of the Mosel River that is in Germany could very well be the most beautiful. It is certainly more winding there than it is as it travels from France, where it's called the Moselle , and through Luxembourg.
A great bike path on either side of the river travels past vineyards, castles and quaint river towns. My journey was from Cochem to Bernkastel-Kues.
The castle at Cochem (Reichsburg Cochem) is one of the grandest along the Mosel. Its history dates back to the 11th century, but the original structure was destroyed by fire in 1689 and lay in ruins until 1868. It was at that time that it was given the then-popular Neo-Gothic style.
Alf is one of several quaint towns along the Mosel River in Germany. Americans giggle at the name, and the Germans wonder why.
Dating back some 2000 years Before Christ, Trier is Germany's oldest city. Many still-standing Roman ruins can be found in the oldest part of the city of about 100,000.
Bernkastel-Kues is a charming 700-year-old town that sits on the banks of the Mosel River. It has a picturesque Aldstadt (Old Town) lined with half-timbered houses and a castle which towers above, offering a scenic view of the town and river.
The Mosel River has a series of 10 locks between Koblenz and Trier.
