a tribute to 14 firefighters
...the Storm King Fourteen Memorial Trail

In July of 1994, 14 firefighters were tragically killed while fighting a wildfire on Storm King Mountain.

The trail that leads to the area of the fire and the deaths of the heroic firefighters was made as a tribute to them. It is a steep and rocky uphill trail, purposely left that way as a reminder of what the firefighters experienced.

The main portion of the trail is about 1.5 miles long and leads to an observation point with a view of the area where the fire took place. Beyond the observation point, an unmaintained footpath marked with cairns leads to the two sites where firefighters died. The footpath is quite a bit further and appeared to be quite strenuous also.

Storm King Mountain is located just off the Interstate 70 between Glenwood Springs and New Castle.
