...the Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Morrison, Colorado

You'd never know it was there. I happened upon it when I was traveling the Lariat Loop and saw some really cool red rock formations. I followed the signs that said amphitheatre.

Nestled between two red monoliths are 9, 450 seats along 69 rows and a pretty good view of the Denver skyline. Construction began in 1936, and one of the first things that had to be done was to remove the massive boulders that lay where the seats are now. Completed, it was one of the most spectacular outdoor concert areas in the world.

Who has performed there?? Well, the day I visited, a Saturday, it was going to be Neil Young. Otheres: The Beatles, U2, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. Bonnie Raitt is scheduled for this coming month, and so is Nora Jones and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

There are 69 marked rows, and the highest seat number I saw was 133, at its widest.

From the outside, the view of the amphitheatre is these two large slabs shooting skyward.

Outside the amphitheatre is Red Rocks Park, an area with incredible views and hiking trails.
What a view the concert-goers must have in the evenings! The Denver skyline, 15 mile away, is visible, and in the far distance (that strip of white) is the Denver International Airport on Denver's east side.
